Welcome to Year Two!
The Year Two team are:
Miss Finney (Class Teacher),
Mrs Slavin (Teaching Assistant)
I am very excited to be joining the teaching team here at Woodlands, and I am looking forward to a busy, fun packed year. Year 2 have already got off to a great start and have shown us that they are very creative. Look below for a few of the pictures of work that they have already completed whilst practising their fine motor skills.
Make sure you have read the newsletter that has gone home which contains the information about what we will be up to this term. Additionally, please come along to the ‘Meet the Teacher’ presentation on Thursday 14th at 3.30pm. At this meeting I will be able to explain in a little more detail about how a typical day in Year 2 will run, the usual class time table, equipment that is needed and answer any questions that you may have. I will be in class until 4.30pm if any parent who is unable to come to the presentation wishes to pop in any later.
I look forward to meeting you all!
Autumn Term 2018
As in previous years, we will have daily Maths and English lessons including spelling, grammar, phonics and reading. We teach different topics each half term and try to link our topic to our Maths and English lessons. The children will have History, Geography, Science, Computing, RE, Design and Technology, PSCHE, Art, PE, Music and French lessons during the week delivered through a variety of different topics. We always aim to make lessons fun and creative and hope that the children leave the school day excited to talk about what they have learnt.
Spring Term 2019
This term we will continue to have daily Maths and English. The children are becoming more confident in these subjects and will be writing and reading more at length. Our main topics are 'The Great Fire of London' and 'Brunel'. These topics will enable us to be building sculptures, learning about the history of Fire Fighting and use ICT to 'roam' the streets of London.
Pictures so far this term
We have had the chance to meet Nick Butterworth - the author of 'The Whisperer' our book for Words in the Wood.
We have also met with local fire fighters who explained about the importance of their job.
This term we will be introducing a lot of high quality texts to the children to speak their imaginations. The children will be regularly exposed to new language and the way in which words can be used powerfully.
We will be linking all aspects of our curriculum where possible. For example this term we will be making sandwiches. We will be researching different continents around the world and linking this to the type of sandwich they eat!
Additionally we will be learning about places far away - including Space! The children will be writing instructions and explanations about many aspects of the area, in particular the Moon Landing by Neil Armstrong.
We value any home support that you are able to give. Children will be expected to read every day, as well as practice prepared lists of spellings and times tables.
Reading – Please hear your child read as often as possible with a minimum of three times a week. Your child should be able to freely read the text they take home with only a few unfamiliar words having to be decoded. Reading books are changed once a week unless you indicate in your child’s planner that they have read at home and require a new book. There is a box in the classroom for children that require new books. If your child has read at home every night in a week, they will receive a raffle ticket to possibly win a prize in the draw on a Friday. If they read three times a week they will get to put a point onto the Class Dojo. Any extra effort or hard work in reading will gain children 2 raffle tickets and increase their chance of winning.
Home Learning Book – Each week, one piece of homework will be sent home on Tuesday and due back on Monday. This will be a research question with a linked optional piece of writing.
Spelling – Children will be given ten spellings each week to learn. These spellings are taken from the National Curriculum. We will have a weekly spelling test on a Monday. New spellings will be given out on a Tuesday.
Maths - Children are expected to be learning their times tables at home. Year 2 expectations are to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The times tables facts being tested will go home on a Tuesday and the children will be tested on the Monday.
For any further information about how you can support your child this year, please don’t hesitate to contact the team.
